Designing and Redesigning

The design phase of the ADDIE model has thus been a lot of me researching and taking notes on what I have found. I met again with the team that I will be designing this training for. That meeting helped clarify their needs and discuss how I envision this training. The initial thoughts I had on the design have remained the same, I just have a more general umbrella to work under. Through their survey and in conversations, the team indicated that their future direction is student led learning. I have chosen to focus on instructional practices that will support that direction. I will then break those instructional practices down into the three learning modals: online, face-to-face, and blended. The design phase is definitely a lot of research and communication to build the best training to meet the client’s needs.
In addition to providing training on different instructional practices and how they will look in the three learning modals, I will also be researching and providing sample technology to support the online versions of the learning modals. For example, one of the instructional practices that I would like to highlight is discussions. In an online or blended learning environment, the application Flipgrid would be an appropriate technology to utilize. Flipgrid is primarily a video posting education app, similar to the idea of Snapchat. Student users can post short videos from their devices into a topic space created by the teacher. Depending on settings by the teacher, student users can respond to other posts or like them. The social media style has been appealing to students. I have utilized this in my school library for fun scavenger hunts or for my older students to record quick book reviews. My students have been very excited when I break out a Flipgrid QR in the library and this diversifies the discussions allowing my students who are not strong writers but excellent talkers to express themselves in a format that is a strength for them.
Looking ahead, I have also been forming an idea of how I want to deliver this training. My experience has been with using Canvas as my learning management software (LMS). However, my district and my university are not going to create a Canvas course for me to use for this project so I am thinking outside the box. I am looking at creating a Google site to post my training on, and I will utilize student paced Nearpods for the team to work through at their own pace.
